What is Control Room™?

Control Room™ is our 4-week, mentor-led program for independent artists who are serious about turning their passion for making music into a lasting career. You'll learn exactly how to build the business around your music - because if you want to make a living from it, that's exactly what it takes.

Over the years we've met thousands of talented artists making brilliant music, who have no idea how to manage the business around it. Rights, royalties, how money flows, how to run a release campaign, how to plan for the long term - building a music career right now is much harder than it needs to be, and most artists are left trying to figure it all out alone. So we decided to do something about it - and Control Room™ was born.

Think about independent artists like Tyler, the Creator, Dave, Little Simz, Russ, Tash Sultana - they don't just make great music, they've taken complete ownership of how it's reached the world. They've built their own teams, record labels, retained their rights, controlled their creative direction, and played a big part in managing their own rise. None of that happened by accident, and nearly all artists who build careers like that treat the business side as seriously as the music itself. Control Room™ is designed to give you that same way of thinking.

Over four weeks, you'll work directly with a mentor to build the structure your ideal career needs. You'll understand exactly how successful managers, labels, and marketing teams operate - so you can start making your own strategic decisions with  confidence. No traditional record deals or managers required.

Whether this is your first release or your fiftieth - if any part of your music career feels unclear, or you're just tired of making things up as you go along - Control Room™ is where that stops. And with our 100% confidence guarantee - try the first session, and if it isn't right for you, let us know and we'll issue a full refund - the only risk is not finding out.

Suitable For:

•  Music Creators  •  Producers  •  DJs   •  Songwriters  •  Band Members

What we cover, week by week

Module 1 - How do independent artists set up a professional music career from day one?

Structure your artist career with the tools, systems and habits of a creative professional

You're not just here to make music. You're here to build something real - and that means treating your career with the clarity and intention of a creative professional. This module shows you how to run your artist project as a functioning business from day one.

What this module covers:

  • Setting Up as a Professional Artist - Choose the right business model for your career: sole trader, limited company, or partnership.

  • Banking, Cashflow, and Financial Readiness - Open a business bank account, manage your income clearly, and prepare for grants, taxes, and growth.

  • Mapping the Music Industry - Understand the real structure of the industry: labels, publishers, distributors, PROs, sync, live - and how artists power the whole system.

  • Artist Income: Where the Money Comes From - Explore your revenue streams: streaming, publishing, live, sync, merchandise, brand partnerships, funding, and more.

  • Time Management for Creative Professionals - Design a routine that balances creativity and momentum - and supports your mental health along the way.

  • Digital Organisation for Artists - Build systems for your music files, metadata, press assets, lyrics, and documents so you're always pitch-ready.

  • Systems That Keep Your Career Moving - The real-world tools and approaches that professionally run artists use to stay consistent and build long-term careers.

By the end of this module, you'll have the right setup, tools, and systems for your next phase. You'll understand how the industry operates, where your income can come from, and how to stay organised, balanced, and ready for growth. Control Room™  students have used this foundation to negotiate publishing deals, secure BPI funding, and build the infrastructure behind successful touring careers.

Module 2 - How do music royalties, splits, and rights registration actually work for independent artists?

Protect your music, register it properly, and turn rights into revenue

Music is art - but it's also intellectual property. According to PRS for Music (2025), a significant proportion of royalties owed to independent artists go uncollected because songs are never properly registered. This module gives you a clear, confident foundation in the systems that turn songs into income.

What this module covers:

  • Copyright: What You Own and How to Protect It - What copyright means and how it applies to your songs, recordings, and ideas.

  • PRS, PPL, and MCPS - How to get your music properly registered to collect the royalties you're owed in the UK and globally.

  • Songwriter Splits, Publishing Shares, and Metadata - How to track and manage co-writing relationships - and ensure you get paid accurately.

  • Publisher Deals Explained - What publishing companies offer, how deals are structured, and what to watch for in contracts.

  • Producer Agreements and Guest Features - The paperwork behind collaborations — and how to avoid future disputes.

  • Sync Licensing Basics - How your music ends up in film, TV, ads, and games - and what makes it syncable.

Module 3 - How do record labels, distributors, and artist teams work - and when does an independent artist actually need them?

Understand how music is released and how to build the right support around you

Whether you're releasing independently or building toward a label deal, understanding how music moves through the industry gives you a structural advantage. This module covers the full picture - from inside a label to your own distribution setup.

What this module covers:

  • How Record Labels Actually Work - The departments, responsibilities, and timelines inside major and indie labels.

  • Record Deals Explained - Deal types, clauses, advances, options, and what happens after you sign.

  • How to Pitch to a Label - What A&Rs are actually looking for — and how to position yourself professionally.

  • Working with Distributors - How to get your music into the world with distribution that fits your goals.

  • Building Your Artist Team - When and how to bring in managers, agents, lawyers, publicists, and social teams.

  • Managing Professional Relationships - How to hold your ground, communicate clearly, and stay aligned with your partners.

By the end of this module, you'll have a clear strategy for releasing your music, positioning yourself professionally, and building the team that's right for your goals.

Module 4 - How do independent artists fund their career, build brand partnerships, and create income that lasts?

Plan your next steps with the strategy, funding and support to grow on your terms

A sustainable music career takes more than music. It takes a long-term strategy, smart partnerships, and a financial plan that actually works. According to Arts Council England (2023–24), only 21% of DYCP applicants successfully received funding - understanding how to write a strong application is a direct income skill. This final module helps you build that foundation.

What this module covers:

  • Funding Opportunities for Artists - Grants, foundations, and crowdfunding options — and how to write a strong application.

  • Brand and Business Partnerships - What makes brands want to work with artists - and how to build your offer and approach.

  • Live Income and Touring Strategy - Plan shows that grow your audience, generate revenue, and attract industry attention.

  • Budgeting and Forecasting - Know what your next steps will cost - and how to stay financially in control.

  • Wellbeing and Longevity - Build a career that supports your mental health, life goals, and evolving creative identity.

  • Where to Get Help - A directory of trusted organisations, professionals, and advisors who support artist growth.

By the end of this module, you'll have a personalised growth strategy in place, with a clear understanding of how to fund your next steps, build the right partnerships, and create a career that aligns with your values, goals, and wellbeing.

Your One-to-One Career Strategy Session

Work Directly With Your Mentor to Break Down Your Situation and Build a Plan That Makes Sense for You

Every Control Room™ program includes a personal one-to-one strategy session with your mentor - dedicated time to work through your specific situation, not a generic template.

What your session covers:

  • Artist Setup and Career Goals - Review where you are, where you want to go, and how your current setup supports your vision.

  • Troubleshooting and Strategic Solutions - Work through current challenges in rights, partnerships, time management, or creative structure.

  • Immediate Action Planning - Identify realistic, high-impact next steps you can take straight away.

Meet Your Mentor:
Matt Errington

I love working closely with artists, and I’ve been lucky enough to do it for over 20 years.

A lot of that work isn’t just about the music. It’s about the decisions around it - what to do next, what not to do, and how to make sense of everything when there are multiple directions things could go.

That’s why I like being part of Control Room™. It’s for artists who want to self-manage and properly understand their business, not just follow someone else’s path. It gives us space to look at your situation and work out what actually makes sense for you.

Recently I’ve been working with an artist developing a fan-first model from the ground up, focusing on connection and sustainability rather than just scale. I’ve also seen the other side of it, helping develop an artist from a first release through to international touring, record and publishing deals, and over fifty million streams. Alongside that, I’ve worked on government training projects, helping shape how future managers approach their role - always coming back to the same thing, that the artist should be at the centre of it all.

Sure, those experiences are very different, but they point to the same thing. There isn’t one path. What matters is building something that fits. That’s the part I enjoy most - helping artists find a way forward that feels clear, realistic, and genuinely their own.

And if you’re on the program, you won’t be doing it alone. I’m here to help you think things through and move forward with energy and confidence.

I'm genuinely excited to meet you and to get started!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I speak to someone before I join Control Room™?

Yes - and it's encouraged. You can reach the Xpandr team by email at hello@xpandr.co, by phone at +44 (0)207 078 4022, by WhatsApp, or by scheduling a free video call directly from the site. Control Room™ is a real financial and time commitment, and the team wants you to be confident it's the right fit before you enrol. There's no sales pressure - just a straightforward conversation about where you are in your career and whether the programme matches what you need. Book a call via the Contact page.

How much does Control Room™ cost?

The current programme fee is £649, including VAT for UK customers. International students pay the ex-VAT price at checkout, with local taxes applied where applicable. This fee covers all four live sessions, all session replays, the full Control Room™ Toolkit (budgeting tools, promo templates, and strategy guides), ongoing mentor support during the programme, and your personal one-to-one career strategy session. Payment by instalment is available via Klarna and Clearpay - choose this option at checkout.

How much time do I need to commit each week?

Control Room™ runs for 4 weeks, with one 2-hour live session per week - 8 hours of structured learning in total. You may want to set aside an additional 1-2 hours per week for self-guided work: reviewing your toolkit materials, applying what you've covered, and preparing for your one-to-one session. The programme is designed to fit around a working schedule - not require you to clear your calendar. Flexible session times (afternoon, evening, and weekend options) are available to suit different time zones and commitments.

What exactly will I have at the end of Control Room™?

By the end of Control Room™, you'll have a professional business setup tailored to your specific goals as an artist - not a generic template. That means: a clear system for managing income, rights, and creative admin; confidence with royalties, splits, and contracts; a smart release and distribution plan; a growth strategy covering funding, partnerships, and sustainability; the tools to build and manage your artist team; and a personalised plan from your one-to-one session. Students have used these foundations to negotiate Sony Publishing deals, secure BPI funding, and build sold-out touring careers.

Will I get personal feedback, or is this group-based?

Both. Control Room™ includes live group sessions with up to 20 participants - small enough to be interactive, with genuine back-and-forth between artists and your mentor. You also get a dedicated one-to-one strategy session with Matt, tailored to your specific situation, goals, and career stage. During the programme weeks, ongoing mentor support is available for questions that arise between sessions. The group dynamic is a deliberate part of the programme - artists in the same cohort often collaborate, share contacts, and continue working together after the programme ends.

What's your refund policy?

Control Room™ is backed by a 100% Confidence Guarantee. If you attend the first session and decide the programme isn't right for you, notify the team within 7 days and receive a full refund - no questions asked, no small print. The guarantee exists because the programme's value depends on it being the right fit. If it's not, Xpandr would rather refund you than keep your money for a programme that isn't serving you. You can review the full terms in the Booking Terms and Conditions linked in the site footer.

Is Control Room™ only for independent artists, or does it work for signed artists too?

Control Room™ is primarily designed for independent artists managing their own careers - but signed artists consistently find value in it, particularly around rights, income management, and team dynamics. Understanding how royalties are structured, what a publishing deal actually means, and how to manage professional relationships is relevant regardless of whether you're signed. Artists who come into Control Room™ with a label deal often discover they've been leaving income uncollected or misunderstanding their own contract terms. The programme gives you the knowledge to have more informed conversations with everyone on your team.

Are there scholarships or funded places available?

Xpandr occasionally offers brand-funded places and scholarship spots for artists who demonstrate financial need or exceptional commitment to their career. These are not always publicly advertised - the best way to be notified when they open is to join the waitlist or send a message directly to hello@xpandr.co. If you're in a position where the fee is a genuine barrier, get in touch before assuming the door is closed. The instalment payment option via Klarna and Clearpay is also worth exploring if upfront cost is the main concern.

What is a music career self-management program for independent artists?

A music career self-management program teaches independent artists the practical skills to run their own career professionally - without needing a manager, a label, or an agent to make decisions for them. It covers the operational side of a music career: rights registration, royalty collection, release planning, distribution, team building, and income management. Control Room™ at Xpandr is a 4-week, mentor-led version of this program, designed specifically for independent artists who are already making music and need the professional infrastructure to match their creative output.

How do independent artists collect the royalties they're owed in the UK?

Independent artists in the UK collect royalties through three main organisations: PRS for Music (performance royalties from public performance, broadcasting, and streaming), PPL (neighbouring rights income from public performance of recordings), and MCPS (mechanical royalties from physical and digital reproduction - administered under the PRS for Music umbrella, so artists register for both through the same platform). Whilst PRS for Music do not publicly share how much revenue goes unclaimed due to errors in this registration process, The Guardian reported in the amount to be £2.7 million in 2019 alone. Despite this, revenues paid out by PRS for Music to rights holders in 2024 amounted to a massive £1.02 billion. Control Room's rights and royalties module covers the full registration process for all three bodies, songwriter splits, publishing shares, and metadata - the practical steps that turn songs into income.

What does a music career management program actually cover?

A music career management program covers the operational and strategic side of running an independent music career. Core topics typically include: intellectual property and rights registration (PRS, PPL, MCPS), music publishing and royalty structures, record deal and distribution models, release planning and marketing strategy, team building (managers, agents, lawyers, publicists), income diversification (sync, live, brand partnerships, funding), and long-term career planning. Control Room™ at Xpandr covers all of these across four weekly sessions, structured around the real decisions independent artists face - from their first release to actively building momentum in the music industry.

How do independent artists get funding for their music career in the UK?

Independent artists in the UK can access funding through Arts Council England's Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) grants, the BPI's Music Export Growth Scheme (MEGS) for international touring, the Musicians' Union's development funds , and a range of regional music development organisations. According to Arts Council England data, only 21% of DYCP applications were successful - meaning a well-written application is a direct competitive advantage. Control Room™'s funding module covers the main UK grant sources, what strong applications contain, and how to approach crowdfunding and brand partnerships as supplementary income streams alongside grant funding.

What is the difference between PRS, PPL, and MCPS for artists in the UK?

PRS for Music, PPL, and MCPS are three separate UK organisations that collect different types of royalties for music creators. PRS for Music collects performance royalties when music is performed live, broadcast on radio or TV, streamed on digital platforms, or played in public venues - and distributes these to songwriters and publishers. PPL collects neighbouring rights income when recorded music is broadcast or played publicly, distributing to recording rights holders (artists and labels). MCPS collects mechanical royalties when music is reproduced physically or digitally - including streams - and is administered under the PRS for Music umbrella, meaning artists can register for MCPS and PRS through the same platform. Independent artists need to register with all three to collect their full entitlement.

What is sync licensing and can independent artists access it without a publisher or sync agent?

Sync licensing is the process of placing music in TV shows, films, advertisements, video games, or online content in exchange for an upfront sync fee and ongoing royalties. Independent artists can access sync licensing without a traditional sync agent by building a cleared catalogue - music where all master and publishing rights are confirmed - and pitching directly to sync libraries, music supervisors, or via non-exclusive sync agents who work on a placement-by-placement basis. Control Room™'s Module 2 covers sync licensing basics: what makes music syncable, how rights clearance works, and the practical steps for getting your catalogue into the sync market.

How do record label deals work for independent artists in 2026?

Record label deals in 2026 range from traditional 360-degree deals (where the label takes a share of all income streams including live and merchandise) to licensing deals (where the artist licenses recordings for a set period, then reclaims ownership), distribution deals, and joint venture arrangements. The terms vary significantly, and the advance - the upfront payment from the label - is recouped before the artist receives royalties. Control Room™'s Module 3 covers how record labels are structured internally, what different deal types mean in practice, what A&Rs are looking for when they consider signing an artist, and how to read a basic label contract.

How long does it take to set up a professional business structure as an independent artist?

Setting up a professional business structure as an independent artist typically takes 1-2 weeks for the foundational steps: registering as a sole trader or limited company with HMRC, opening a dedicated business bank account, and registering with PRS for Music, PPL, and MCPS for royalty collection. The administrative setup is straightforward - the bigger challenge is understanding which structure fits your specific career model and goals. Control Room™'s first module covers the setup process in full, including the difference between sole trader and limited company status, what a business bank account requires, and how to stay organised for grants, taxes, and professional partnerships.
